Thinking Oasis for Capacity Development participated in the second national Sumo Robot Competition, which was held by Al-Hussein Technical University (HTU) over the course of July 14 and 15, in which participants from the thinking Oasis won the Junior Engineers Award.
More than 150 teams and more than 50 educational institutions, including universities, schools and centers from various parts of the Kingdom participated in the competition. Two teams from Thinking Oasis presented two robots developed by the participants, Ibrahim Wahba, Adam Wahba, and Aya Al-Ataqi (the A2I robot), and Tala Tadros, Khaled Al-Nazer, and Lubna Abu Ghosh (the KLT robot), and the two teams qualified for the final. The A2I robot won the Junior Engineers Award worth 200 Jordanian dinars.
Participants, aged 13-15 years, worked for four months to develop the participating robots, which required learning programming, design, 3D printing and planning a strategy for the robots to face other participants in the sumo ring. This learning and innovation journey was supervised by engineers Abdullah Balloul and engineer Yasmine Tawafsha from the Thinking Oasis team.
The Executive Director of the Thinking Oasis, Nada Al-Sharif, shared, “The goal of involving Thinking Oasis students in this competition was about having to travel in a learning journey that was designed specifically for their needs, which started from an idea for a robot to face in the Sumo ring, to the participants defining learning goals that lead them to developing technical skills and eventually innovate. Our team was mentoring them through this journey, supporting them with tools and supervision. Our environment encouraged participants to experiment, make errors, and learn.”
It is worth noting that the Thinking Oasis Foundation for Capacity Development is a non-profit organization that aims to provide an educational and practical space to develop critical thinking skills among school students through science and technology (STEM) programs, to raise the competencies of children and adolescents and prepare them for the future.
